The mesmerising view of the Hunter’s Moon, the year’s largest and brightest moon, was witnessed from different parts of India on October 17. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth.
The celestial event coincided with the auspicious night of Sharad Purnima on October 17. On Thursday night, the moon was just 351,519 kilometres away from Earth, appearing about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.
Several social media users took to X to post pictures of the supermoon as it dazzled the night sky.

The supermoon was also witnessed in Madhya Pradesh’s Raipur city from its clock tower.
This phenomenon was also observed in other parts of the world, including New Zealand, Japan, and Australia.
The supermoon seen on Thursday is known as the Hunter’s Moon as it is the time of year when leaves start to fall, heralding the onset of winter. Ancient communities would increase hunting at this time of year.
The next full moon on 15 November is the ‘Beaver Moon’ as it is linked to the time that beavers start to take shelter ahead of winter. This will also happen to be a supermoon.
